Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei delivered a fiery address to Iran and international community on Tuesday, declaring in direct response to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s demand that Iran surrender unconditionally. Khamenei made these bold declarations amid rising tensions in the Middle East region with Israel and Iran engaging in unprecedented direct military exchanges.

Khamenei addressed Iran’s enemies and those supporting them during a nationally televised speech from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Hall, rejecting calls for de-escalation that would compromise Iran’s sovereignty. Khamenei declared: “Let it be known to our adversaries and those supporting them: The Islamic Republic of Iran will never surrender. Not to bombs, sanctions or psychological warfare,” according to Khamenei. Our strength lies in faith, people power and resolve. Trump can make threats but they mean nothing when dealing with Iran.”

Trump made these statements following a controversial press conference during which he said Iran’s leadership must “surrender without conditions”, and suggested Ayatollah Khamenei may be safe from military strikes in the near future.

Khamenei swiftly replied to President Bush’s statements by noting: “The former U.S. president believes threats will break a nation forged through revolution and martyrdom; however, he is mistaken. Iran has faced imperialist power before and emerged stronger; we won’t forget nor forgive these threats!”

Israel-Iran tensions have seen an exponential escalation over recent days, as both sides engage in missile and drone strikes on each other’s military sites in Tehran, Isfahan, and near the Persian Gulf while Iran has launched rockets aimed at Israeli cities like Tel Aviv and Haifa.

Iranian state media reported nationwide rallies held to show support for Khamenei’s message, with crowds chanting “Death to America and Death to Israel”, while waving flags and holding portraits of Khamenei. Government buildings in Tehran were illuminated with red and green lighting as a show of national solidarity.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard issued a statement shortly after Khamenei’s speech, promising their loyalty and vowing to increase operations against “Zionist aggression and imperialist threats.” Additionally, any attack against Iran’s leadership would be met with “a firestorm of retaliation”.

U.S. response to Khamenei’s speech was measured but firm. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan declared, “The United States remains committed to regional stability and protecting its allies. While we try to avoid unnecessary escalation, threats against US personnel or our partners cannot be tolerated.”

Diplomatic efforts to defuse the crisis appear stalled. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on both sides to display restraint, warning of “an even larger war in this region.”

Analysts note that Khamenei’s speech signals an increasingly hardened position that leaves little room for negotiation or compromise. According to Middle East expert Dr. Neda Alavi, Khamenei “is drawing a red line.” This rhetoric reflects Iran’s deeply-held resistance doctrine.

As missile sirens continue reverberate across the region and world leaders struggle to deescalate tensions, Khamenei’s words make one thing clear: Iran has no intention of surrendering — now or under pressure.
