On October 25, 2025, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted a drone strike in southern Lebanon targeting a vehicle near Harouf in Nabatieh District and killing two individuals while injuring two. IDF identified one of those killed as Abbas Hassan Karki who worked at Hezbollah’s Southern Front Headquarters and is described by them as their logistics commander, according to Al Jazeera reports.
The attack took place despite a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States that has been in effect since November 2024 and required both Israel and Hezbollah to leave southern Lebanon under Lebanese control, but Israel maintained five strategic outposts along its border, citing concerns over Hezbollah activities there, according to The Times of Israel.
IDF officials have justified their recent actions as necessary to dismantle Hezbollah’s military infrastructure and forestall any possible resurgence from Hezbollah. Leading up to the Harouf strike, Israel carried out several raids across southern and eastern Lebanon targeting weapons depots, training camps and missile manufacturing sites of Hezbollah; these operations resulted in several casualties including four fatalities (one was an elderly woman), several casualties among whom were female National Herald workers allegedly used by Hezbollah for weapons depots as targets alleged Hezbollah weapons depots or training camps which could facilitate its resurgence resurfacing as potential weapons depots allowing it to regroup resurgeance resurgence efforts of Hezbollah.
Hezbollah has not made an official response to Israel’s latest strike; however, its spokesperson Rida Aatwi was reported killed during a separate strike attack near Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh in the Nabatieh district – she had previously been injured during war between Hezbollah and Israel (L’Orient Today).
Hostilities between Israel and Lebanon continue to worsen the humanitarian situation in southern Lebanon. Even after a ceasefire has taken effect, many residents remain displaced due to Israeli airstrikes and military presence in the region; satellite images reveal widespread destruction of homes, farms, infrastructure and more, particularly in towns like Naqoura and Houla (Reuters).
International bodies, including the UN, have called upon both sides to respect the terms of the ceasefire agreement and work towards lasting peace. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk has advocated for increased efforts to end hostilities between Lebanon and Israel amid continued Israeli airstrikes despite agreed truce agreements, according to Reuters.
As of now, the situation remains tense, with both parties asserting their respective positions and hoping for an easing of violence and restoration of peace and stability in the region. The international community continues to closely follow developments, in hopes of seeing a de-escalation and return of order and peace to this volatile area.
