Hamas has strongly condemned what Palestinian officials described as an arson attack by Israeli settlers against a mosque in the occupied West Bank, sparking tensions and increasing tensions in an already volatile region. Local authorities reported that fire broke out early Thursday, damaging parts of the building before residents managed to put out its flames.
Palestinian officials reported that unknown individuals entered the village where the attack took place during the night and set fire to the entrance of a mosque, leaving scorch marks and damage on exterior walls, damaged carpets near its doorway, as well as potential for further spread had early morning prayers not been noticed by locals in time.
Hamas issued a statement denouncing the attack as an attack against religious sanctity and calling on international bodies to address what it referred to as an increasing pattern of attacks against Palestinian places of worship and property. They stressed the need for increased protection of civilians and religious sites throughout West Bank.
Israeli authorities stated they have initiated an investigation into the incident. Police units and forensic teams visited the site to collect evidence, though no arrests were immediately reported.
