Israel’s military operations against Gaza continue to escalate, prompting Egypt and Turkey to voice strong objections to Israeli plans for an all-out takeover of Gaza by issuing statements condemning these plans and calling on international bodies to act to avoid further escalation. Egypt and Turkey, two regional powers which have long supported Palestinian rights while opposing Israeli policies in occupied Palestinian territory have expressed strong concerns at Israel’s announcement of such plans for takeover.

Israel’s offensive in Gaza, initially launched as a response to rocket fire from militant groups within the strip, has escalated into an all-out military campaign aimed at dismantling Hamas – the militant group governing Gaza – as an all-out military campaign aimed at dismantling it and eliminating its military infrastructure. While Israel claims its operations are necessary in protecting citizens and eliminating Hamas military infrastructure, their takeover announcement has alarmed Arab world states as it signals Israel’s intent not only to secure its interests but also to establish long-term occupation over Gaza.

Egypt, which borders Gaza and has long been seen as a mediator between Israeli and Palestinian factions, has expressed serious alarm at Israel’s proposed military strategy for Gaza. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi warned that any move to permanently take control would only worsen an already dire humanitarian situation and lead to more instability – further deepening Palestinian suffering while creating more destruction in Gaza – adding “This escalation will only deepen Palestinian suffering further and bring more destruction,” while simultaneously calling upon international agencies to intervene and prevent Israel from embarking upon such a path of action.

Egypt has stressed the significance of a political solution based on two-state principles, such as East Jerusalem as capital for both states. Egypt has long advocated for Palestinian rights within both Arab League and United Nations for statehood; their condemnation of Israel’s Gaza takeover plan further highlights their opposition to their military occupation of Palestinian territories.

At the same time, Turkey has voiced strong condemnation of Israel. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described its plans as an act of aggression and violation of international law, accusing it of trying to erase Palestinian identities in Gaza while warning that this action would not go unchallenged. Erdogan stated in public address: “We will not remain silent in face of such oppression – all nations must stop Israel’s military occupation and aggression against the Palestinian people”. Turkey has long stood with Palestinian rights on an international stage as well as being vocal critics of Israeli military operations in Gaza and West Bank territories.

Turkey’s condemnation is particularly noteworthy given the tensions that have existed between it and Israel over issues related to Palestine and Jerusalem in recent years, specifically settlement expansion by Israeli settlers in the West Bank as well as Israeli policies toward Palestinians. Turkey has regularly called for international action against Israeli occupation as well as supporting Palestinian statehood at forums like the UN or OIC.

Israel, responding to pressure from Egypt, Turkey and other regional actors, has justified its actions by saying the takeover is essential in protecting Israel’s security by dismantling Hamas – which it considers terrorist – while rejecting calls for ceasefire or other forms of relief; instead arguing that military operations must continue until all Hamas cells have been fully dismantled.

Israel’s plans have drawn condemnation from around the globe, with Western nations appealing to Israel to use restraint and minimize civilian casualties. Meanwhile, the UN warned of catastrophic consequences resulting in even greater humanitarian distress; reports from Gaza indicate hundreds of civilians have already been killed in ongoing fighting, worsening humanitarian conditions even further.

Egypt and Turkey’s criticism reflects regional unease at Israel’s military buildup in Gaza and its implications for regional peace and stability. Both nations have called for immediate cessation of Israeli military operations there and renewed talks aimed at ending Israeli-Palestinian conflicts; whether their calls will lead to any change in international policy is yet unknown; nonetheless their condemnations shows growing international demand for accountability and just solutions for Palestinian people.
